Common Mistakes made in Email Verification Process!
In my last post, we talked about email validation, how it works, and the importance of a confirmation email. If you haven't read the article, click the link below!👇
Why Email Validation is important! Email Validation Rules!
Today, this article is about Email Verification but first here is a definition of email verification below:
What is Email Verification?
Email verification is a method that email marketers use to confirm that a subscriber or user has provided a correct email and wishes to receive important updates from their brand or business. This is usually done to improve the effectiveness of their campaigns as it weeds out unsafe in inactive emails.
Usually, after the submission of the email address, a verification code is sent to the user in order to verify the email address submitted.
What is an Email Verification Code?
The Verification Code is similar to a password (usually a short numeric code) that is sent to the user to verify that he/she has entered a valid email address.
For an Email verification tool, it usually generates a 6-digit code with 1-hour validity (for security reasons) and saves it locally, and then sends it as an email to the user.
To check the code, all that the user needs to do is have the email address. The email verifier will then look for the received code in its local database, compare it and delete it if the code is correct, and give you a response.
When a user successfully subscribes to a company's email list, they receive a unique link in their submitted email address's inbox to approve receiving emails from said company.
This link both protects the company from having invalid email addresses and the user from getting spam emails.
Ways in which an Email Address can be Verified
• Delivering an email from a different account:
You can verify the email deliverability to an email account by mailing them an email, but not doing that from your primary email account as that would be too risky, but from a recommended dummy email address and try out sending emails to your recipients to see if the email address is valid. This produces accurate results but can be a really dreary task as emails should be sent to every email address in your email list.
• Checking the email syntax:
Syntax and typographical errors are one of the most common issues with email addresses. They can be manually checked and amended. The typical email address follows the format of abc@def.com. It has three mandatory parts so it is possible to check for possible omissions or mistakes in email addresses but this also is a tedious task to perform and doesn't guarantee 100% accuracy.
• Pinging the server:
Pinging the server is a kind of technical procedure used to verify email addresses without sending emails. This provides accurate results but is a dreary task as well.
• Looking up the DNS server:
The DNS lookup method is used to check the authenticity of the domain. It also provides you with any blacklist or spammy data linked to the domain.
• Conducting an IP address lookup:
IP address lookup is another way to check the authenticity of the user's email account. This lookup helps you by providing the IP details of the user’s email address.
• Using an email verification tool:
An email validation tool can help you do all the technical verifications in one go.
You just need to add the email list, and the automated system will verify all the email addresses for you. It is highly recommended as all the other methods listed above are tedious, and each task has to be done individually which is time-consuming.
Tools that can be used for Email Verification
There are many verification tools that are freely available online. Using these tools alleviates the burden for businesses that wish to undergo email list cleaning. Tools like:
- Zerobounce
- Never bounce
- Email able
- Snovio
- Xverify
- Quick Email Verification
- Atomic email verifier
- Moonmail
- Uplead
- Pabbly connect
I won't go into much detail as I plan to publish a post specifically for email verification tools where I would then provide enough facts and information about these tools; the most effective; the cheapest and their order of rank so do subscribe to be able to get a notification when I do so! Next, we'll talk about:
Benefits of Email Verification
• Prevents hard email bounces when sending emails to invalid and undeliverable email addresses.
• Saves your sender reputation as it helps you avoid being labeled as a spammer Saves precious time and money by preventing the delivery of emails to old or inactive email addresses.
• Ensures that only interested prospects receive proposed materials in their inbox conveniently and professionally.
Difference between Email Verification and Email Validation
Email verification verifies an email address if it is valid and active throughout the process. A valid email address can receive messages from other senders.
Email validation, on the other hand, is the end result of the email verification process.
Common Mistakes made in Email Verification Process
• Being too restrictive:
If you're too strict with your verification, it could cost you subscribers, users, and prospects. Email addresses can have the special characters often used in email addresses, such as an exclamation mark (!), forward slash (/), an equals sign (=). These are all valid symbols, so if your software rejects them, you're denying yourself potential leads.
• Not providing clear inscriptions:
You need to provide clear inscriptions on how and why you need your users' email addresses.
Clear titles will encourage your users to submit their email addresses to you.
• Not using online email verification:
Online email verification is a great way to avoid confusion by rectifying errors along the way.
• Forcing people to enter their address twice:
If you think this will help prevent invalid emails from sneaking into your email list you are making a serious marketing mistake.
Adding an extra field for double entry email confirmation denotes an increased risk of errors and a potential reduction in completion rates. Chances are your users are trying to copy and paste the first line email address.
If the email is poorly spelled at the start, you're just as likely to type it incorrectly twice. This will therefore increase syntax or typo error.
Conclusion
That's it for email verification. If you feel there were some parts not touched or you have any suggestions as to what type of article to publish for you please drop it in the comment section below.
